Where I grew up, getting 12 inches of rain was a good year.
While I lived there, from 1975 to 1993, 12 of those 18 missed the average and one dropped the most rainfall seen in 140 years to make up for it.
It was the desert after all.
By contrast, Savannah averages four times as much rain, and 2016 brought over 65 inches, so I’ve seen more in the last 10 years than Fresno will likely see in the next 40.
Thus, I find it ironic on this sun filled western road trip, aside from encountering a brief storm floating up from the Gulf into southern Louisiana, the most rain has fallen in California, where more than an inch has dropped steadily on us over the last 48 hours, starting shortly after our arrival.
Good thing I was ready to stay put to do some reading.
