For most of my life, people have suggested I write.
Teachers, friends, family, loved ones, almost anyone who has read my words, say I have a gift to share with the world – I dismissed them all out of hand.
I believed stringing words and sentences together in unique ways is done by everyone with minimal effort, much the same way we each of us walks one foot in front of the other, thus the steps on my path seem to me no more interesting than any others, so I’ve kept them to myself.
A few months ago I stumbled across an article that mentioned a psychological phenomenon called Impostor Syndrome. After reading the description, like a first year medical student, I immediately self diagnosed. When I asked my wife to confirm, her response was confident and concise, “Yup. That’s you. 100%.”
Awareness and acceptance is the first step, as you can’t fix what you don’t realize is broken. Now aware of my tendency to dismiss my writing as ordinary and unremarkable, I’ve decided to throw caution to the wind.
How?
By starting a blog and connecting with other supportive writers like me.
Perhaps not the most original move, but forward motion nonetheless.
Not sure where the wind will take me on this journey of words, but I’ve stepped on board, raised the sails and pointed the bow toward the unknown horizon of the sea of uncertainty.
