There, That Violent Country

So, here we are again at the beginning of a new novel. I signed up for the “Novel in a Year” class given by the indefatigable and very talented writer and teacher Richard Thomas. Not to get off topic but might I add here that if you ever have a chance to take any of his classes, do so. The short story class he gives on LitReactor is stellar and really teaches a fresh approach to the short form. Perusing that page he even has one coming up in April. Get to it if you are so inclined. He also offers “Contemporary Dark Fiction” and an advanced writing class as well.

The cabin where it all goes down…

As it stands, the plot of this novel is coming together and I’ve used some interesting tools to coax it out from the dark layers in my skull piece by bloody piece — it’s always hard going — but I have more than enough to get started.

One of my quirks is that I like to mock up a cover that gets pinned to the cork board —alongside the character portraits — that resides above the typewriter. You can see that above. Speaking of typewriters, this week I’m using the old warhorse 1973 IBM Selectric II. It really is a word expelling beast!

I like the way that turned out. It has the feel that I want. Still needs some font work on the name but other than that it’ll do. Stay tuned for the first draft of a synopsis.
